The magic editors and manufacturers at Ellusionist were in the process of designing a new custom deck called Artifice. The design concept involved creating a deck reserved to card sharks, crooks and pro cheaters. I was in charge of designing the jokers. The initial brief called for a young man turning his back to the viewer while holding a card behind him. It took long, but we ended up with a great illustration.
